Summary of Final Oral Presentation 2015-2016

Valuating a stock and Sony's revival

Angel Acosta (Dickinson College)

Amid recent uncertainty on global economic growth, the auto-industry and the electronics industry in Japan has been recognized as a driving force behind the rise of the Nikkei stock average. Out of 8 major electronic companies in Japan, I will evaluate the fundamentals of electronic giant Sony and its stock price. I will analyze whether Sony is a stock that you should have in your portfolio, the future of Sony among other electronic companies in Japan, and finally whether Sony will impact the overall outlook on the Japanese economy moving forward.

Neighborhood Scenery (in picture)

Joseph Brandel (University of California, Los Angeles)

I was born and raised in the San Francisco, bay area. In the last 10 years, my hometown has experienced a dramatic transformation that has fundamentally changed what the neighborhood I grew up in looks like. This change, which has occurred on account of a new influx of people and money related to Silicon Valley, is more commonly called gentrification. This experience has given me a new awareness of what exactly community means and how it is constructed in the mind of its members. In order to study at IUC, my peers and I have left our respective homes and moved to Yokohama for ten months. My presentation looks at how we perceive the environment around us and in what way we are connected to the neighborhoods that we live in. I hope to show some of our experience through photos and videos I have taken throughout our time here.

Performativity and Fluctuation of individual "Zainichi" Identity

Robert Burgos (University of Chicago)

Due to varying external and internal influences impacting minorities in Japan, the identities of 'Zainichi Koreans' are always in a state of flux. This process of building and rebuilding one's 'Othered' Self illustrates the performative nature of Zainichi Identity. This presentation seeks to discuss the process of self performance and production as well as its possible implications through the experiences of several Zainichi Koreans.

The Problems of Popularization: How the group-as-main character is depicted in manga adaptations of The Crab Cannery Ship

Benjamin Burton (Portland State University)

Upon completion of The Crab Cannery Ship (1928), Kobayashi Takiji drafted a letter to Kurahara Korehito detailing what he considered to be the seven most important aspects of the novel. Number one was the choice of eliminating any main characters by depicting the group of laborers as the novel's main character. The ideological significance of this formal choice can be seen in the novel's climax, where the laborers realize that their strike can be successful only through truly collective action. In this way, The Crab Cannery Ship is explicitly political in terms of both form and content. Furthermore, Takiji believed that depicting the group in this way was essential for the future of proletarian literature. But what happens when such a novel is adapted to a more visual medium? In this presentation, I look at the four manga adaptations of The Crab Cannery ship, each of which deals with the problem of the group-as-main character differently, and explore the ideological issues that arise when adapting an explicitly political novel into manga in order to appeal to a wider readership.

Video Game Translation: Evolution and Impact

Elizabeth Bushouse (University of Massachusetts)

Game translation is a very complex process that combines other fields of translation to create a dynamic whole, encompassing literary translation, audiovisual translation, as well as software translation, and has experienced a considerable transformation since the beginning of the game industry. In this presentation, I will briefly explain the process of video game translation, and explore its development using the many official English translations of Final Fantasy IV. Finally, I consider the influence video game translation has had in terms of spreading awareness of translators and the work that they do, as well as breaking down preconceived notions of translation.

Collaboration and Adaptation: The Creative Relationship of Abe Kōbō and Teshigahara Hiroshi

Devon Cahill (University of Minnesota)

The creative partnership of writer Abe Kōbō and film director Teshigahara Hiroshi emerged during the 1960s era of industrialization and urbanization in postwar Japan. Via their protagonists' seemingly superficial interactions in the city, the collaborators' works offer a simultaneously bleak exposé of the contemporary urban subject's struggle to adapt to an ever-shifting environment and hope for the creation of new subject positions. In this paper, I specifically focus on their film adaptation of The Ruined Map and posit that the work epitomizes the potential of collaboration and adaptation to create a world of intertextuality that transcends the limitations of the respective mediums of novel and film. This adaptive process, therefore, allows for the emergence of new subjective potentialities in the otherwise oppressive context of Japan's postwar economic renaissance.

The Global Financial Crisis and its Effects on Japan

Daniel Ceriano (Hofstra University)

As a result of the 2008 global financial crisis, the global economy plunged into a deep recession. GDP levels fell across all developed nations, however the fall in Japan's GDP was the most severe. When looking at the 2009 year-over-year change in GDP, the EU experienced a 4.2% decline, the United States a 2.8% decline, however Japan's GDP fell by 6.2%. Why was the decline in GDP in Japan so much more severe than other developed nations? In this presentation, I will explain various causes and effects of the 2008 global financial crisis, particularly focusing on the effects of the crisis in Japan. I will analyze various factors causing the drop in GDP in Japan such as the inelasticity of Japanese main exports, the fall of the Japanese stock market, Japanese corporate liquidity issues, and the Japanese degree of dependence on foreign trade. At the time of the crisis, the Japanese banking system was in much better condition than the banking systems of other developed nations, however Japan's GDP fell more significantly. Lastly, I will discuss how the Japanese economy remains vulnerable to such a GDP decline in the face of another recession of the same magnitude as the global financial crisis.

The Rise of Japanese Appraisal

Noah Chamberlain (Brigham Young University)

I will be speaking about a particular shareholder remedy that has recently begun to attract much attention in corporate law circles throughout Japan and America; namely, the appraisal remedy. Over the last 10 years, the rise and use of the appraisal right has surprised many who once viewed it as a "peripheral and rarely useful remedy." Following a brief explanation of appraisal and its origins, I will address the role of the appraisal remedy in modern Japan and its growing importance with regard to minority shareholders in particular. Finally, I will propose several ways Japan might strengthen its appraisal remedy, thus spurring shareholder and investor faith in corporations.

Romancing the Pigeon: Queer Intimacy in Hatoful Boyfriend

Miyoko Conley (University of California, Berkeley)

In April 2011, character designer Hato Moa released Hatoful Boyfriend, a video game about dating pigeons. Even though the game utilized simple graphics and game mechanics, its popularity flourished in Japan, spawning other related media. In 2014, it was released in the United States. In concert with performance theory and queer theory, this paper analyzes Hatoful Boyfriend's dating-game mechanics and post-apocalyptic story line to show how the game reveals normative hierarchies among human-animals, non-human animals, and things, and points to queer intimacy as a recuperative space for future survival.

The merchant and the Missionary: Letter from Yokohama,1967-1869

Jessa Dahl (University of Chicago)

Yokohama at the edge of the Meiji Restoration was an international port city in the midst of rapid expansion. Japanese and foreign merchants, missionaries, diplomats, doctors, sailors, soldiers, and entertainers, among others, flocked to the boom town in its early years, creating a community that thrived on international trade and intercultural exchange. This presentation will explore the letters of two men who lived in Yokohama during this period, Yoshida Kōbei, a silk merchant from modern-day Gunma prefecture, and James Curtis Hepburn, an American missionary and physician, in an attempt to understand the dynamics of Yokohama life during this period. While this research is still in its early stages, there is no evidence these men ever met or shared any social connections. Yoshida was primarily involved in the merchant community, while Hepburn was involved with what could perhaps be called Yokohama's intelligentsia--those who wanted to transmit or receive certain types of knowledge (language, technology, religion) that were accessible in and around Japan's foreign settlements. However, there is evidence in their letters that these men were connected by more tangible means—by streets, by illness, by markets—in other words, by Yokohama itself. These letters illustrate two of the many different worlds of Yokohama on the brink of the Meiji period, as well as the way some of the material conditions of life in Yokohama connected them.

Youth: The Contributing Force to the Revitalization of the Tohoku Region

Shirley Dang (Stony Brook University)

This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Since the calamity, the Tohoku region was examined, evaluated and has embarked on the road to recovery. Following the disaster, hundreds of youths from the Tohoku area dispatched on short-term study programs abroad where they shared their personal experiences, dispelled rumors about their hometown, and educated the communities they visited about Japan. These indispensable programs, funded by the Japanese government as well as by private sectors, have significantly cultivated the participants' leadership and community building abilities and impacted their futures. Moving forward, it is these youths and their local community members that will be the important contributing force to create the new Tohoku they envision for the future. Their thoughts and visions will be shared in this presentation.

Education & the Economy: The Future of Japan

Neave Denny (Villanova University)

In 2010, China's GDP surpassed that of Japan. In 2015, Japan's GDP finally rose 0.4%, but this meager increase will not be enough for Japan to maintain its high ranking among the other quickly developing Asian countries. This presentation considers some commonly stated causes of Japan's stagnating economy and examines the connection between economic growth and education systems across the globe. In conclusion, I will present various ways the Abe administration is developing policies to increase efficiency in education as a means to stimulate the economy.

Points to Consider When Filling Your U.S. Tax return While Working Abroad

Riddhi Desai (Boston University)

While filing your taxes is rarely a straightforward process, it can be particularly overwhelming for individuals working abroad. Do I have to file a return in more than one country? How can I decrease my tax burden? What other crucial points should I be considering? However, by familiarizing yourself with a few foreign tax laws, you can make the entire ordeal a little less confusing. This presentation will cover some of the most important foreign tax rules and required filings, with the aim of making your next tax filing just a bit more manageable.

Nakagami Kenji's "Kumanoshu": Blood and Defilement

Benjamin DeTora (Washington University in St. Louis)

A comparison and analysis of Nakagami Kenji's thematic usage of blood and corruption in two short stories, "Fushi" and "Sakuragawa,"taken from his short story collection Kumanoshu. For example, half-human half-beast creatures appear in "Fushi," and Nakagami explores complex familial relations and incest in "Sakuragawa." Nakagami uses blood and corruption to allude to modern Burakumin discrimination, and ultimately by reversing what is "corrupt" with what is "pure," Nakagami offers the possibility that one source of modern discrimination might be erased.

Women's property rights in the Kamakura Period

Cassandra Dierolf (University of Southern California)

In the Kamakura Period (1185-1333), in order to control the warrior class, the Kamakura bakufu established the law system known as the Formulary of Adjudications. Then, after a number of lawsuits occurred, the rulings of those cases became new laws, which came to be called the Supplementary Formulary. Within the Formulary of Adjudications and the Supplementary Formulary, there are a number of clauses which concern the rights of women in holding land. Particularly, in an examination of Clause 24 (est. 1232) of the Formulary of Adjudications and Clauses 327 (est. 1239) and 330 (est. 1285) of the Supplementary Formulary, the limiting of women's property rights over a 50 year period is very clear. In this presentation, these three clauses will be discussed in detail.

Ecology and the Cthulhu Mythos: Murata Motoi's "Sacrifice"

Camila Dodik (University of Minnesota)

I analyze Murata Motoi's "Sacrifice," (2002), a work within the Cthulhu Mythos, from the standpoint of environmental philosophy. I focus particularly on the relationship between human beings and the environment figured in this short story as a subterranean "soil god" that shares similarities with Timothy Morton's concept of the "hyperobject." Through this analysis, I discuss the formal characteristics of environmental horror based on H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos.

Unnaturally Occurring Nature

Thomas Gimbel (University of Chicago)

As time passes, language changes. Not just the meanings and uses of words, but the concepts upon which they are built change profoundly. Take, for example, the Japanese case of the word "shizen," meaning nature. For the premodern version of the word "shizen" and it's interpretation, whether human agency was included or not is a critical question. From an artistic point of view, the idea that one should "reproduce nature as it is" had currency in Japan, but depending on what one understood "nature" to be, this phrase would convey different meanings. By looking at Shinjuku Gyoen, a public park built in Tokyo Japan during the Meiji era, we can see the changes that were endemic to the word "shizen" and it's interpretation. From this, we can conclude that gardens became thought of as a part of the science of horticulture. Put differently, whereas the purpose of the premodern garden was confined mostly to aesthetics, Shinjuku Gyoen was constructed for national interests.

Datebased Desire: An Inquiry into Fujoshi Subjectivites

Emma Hanashiro (Pitzer College)

This presentation explores a theoretical model of how the contemporary Boys Love manga industry and fan communities construct "fujoshi subjectivities." "Fujoshi," a term used among female identifying fans of Boys Love media, can be translated directly into English as "rotten women," and is one of the most recognizable representations of female otaku. The model's objective is to expand Azuma Hiroki's theory of database consumption as discussed in Otaku: Japan's Database Animals by including issues concerning gender and female fans. As Azuma's database consumption theory neglects female otaku, this presentation both challenges and elaborates on his argument while examining the "postmodern positionalities" of contemporary fans.

日本の農業とTPP -国際貿易に対する反応- Japanese Agriculture & the TPP: Responses to International Trade

Max Harrison (Harvard University)

On October 5th, 2015, representatives of 12 Pacific nations, of which Japan is one, concluded talks aimed at establishing the contents of the Trans-Pacific Partnership [TPP]. Unlike free trade agreements that precede it, the TPP seeks to encourage trade between nations of very different levels of economic development. Despite this prospect of greater international unity, a major opponent of the TPP is found in organizations associated with Japanese agriculture. This presentation shall explore the reasons that lie behind the opposition of Japan's agricultural sector to the TPP, and analyze the debates that seek to explain the industry's precarious state. In doing so, I hope to demonstrate that the TPP has brought to the fore fears held not only by farmers, but those shared by a diverse range of Japanese organizations and their members. After all, it appears that the future of not only rural communities but the nation as a whole is tied to enactment of the TPP.

The Girl with the Lip Tattoo

Michael Hayata (University of Wisconsin)

It is said that the Ainu are a people without a written language. Yet embedded within the tattoo patterns engraved on the female body includes a hidden text that reveals the existence of a particular women's culture. By examining the history of the abolishment of Ainu tattoo practices during the early twentieth-century, this presentation interrogates changing conceptualizations of the body at the intersection of modernity and colonialism. It argues that it is ultimately the subsumption of the Ainu within the temporality of linear progressive time that transformed the meaning of these tattoos and resulted in their gradual disappearance. However, once the tattoo is applied, it indefinitely remains on the body. By tracing the lives of Ainu tattooed women after the practice was banned, this presentation argues that a reconceptualization of the past in relation to the present is necessary to arrive at an Ainu politics for a possible future.

A Neglect History, of Japsnese "Comfort Women": Nationalism and Military Sexual Violence

Sara Kang (Williams College)

Since the 1990s, former Korean "comfort women" have stepped out in the public eye to speak out about their past experience as sexual victims of the Japanese Imperial Army. However, the forgotten faces of Japanese "comfort women" and their testimonial stories continue to be missing from this public debate. Why have former Japanese "comfort women" remained silent on the issue, and what problems do they continue to face in Japanese society regarding their painful past as sexual slaves for both the Japanese Imperial Army and U.S. Occupation forces? In this presentation, I will discuss the social and structural injustice that forced many Japanese "comfort women" to distance themselves from their past; how nationalism and militarization worked to create a partition between Korean and Japanese "comfort women"; and finally, how this divide was manifested in their postwar struggle against forgetting and the gradual erasure of their life stories as "comfort women."

Love Blooms on the Battlefield: Nanshoku and the Great Daimyō of the Warring States Period

Alexander Kaplan-Reyes (Columbia University)

While much is known about male-male sexual relationships, otherwise known as nanshoku relationships of the Edo Period, comparatively little is known about the relationships of the Warring States Period, aside from such famous relationships as Oda Nobunaga's and Mori Ranmaru's. Keeping in mind the influence of the the ruling class (including daimyo) on society, I will briefly examine nanshoku relationships aside from Oda Nobunaga's. I will introduce historical documents pertaining to nanshoku and Date Masamune, Uesugi Kenshin, and Ōuchi Yoshitaka, evaluate the reliability of those documents, and from there attempt to uncover a bit about the norms of Warring States Period nanshoku relationships. Concretely speaking, I will examine Date Masamune's letters to Tadano Sakujūrō, "Kenshin kaki," and "Ōuchi Yoshitaka ki," in that order.

The Ghosts of the Edo Period

Miriam Karavias (University of Massachusetts)

Women play an important role throughout the history of supernatural tales in Japan. Female physicality is often presented to exemplify the grotesque, and women themselves appear as demons or ghosts or are subject to horrifying metamorphoses. Indeed it is very common to encounter a female monster rather than a male one, and the most famous ghosts and monsters in the Japanese tradition are overwhelmingly female. Many of the trends in this portrayal of femininity may be traced back to classical and medieval Buddhism in Japan, and although ghost stories in the early modern Tokugawa period gradually secularized as they gained popularity, they retain many of the themes laid down in preceding genres. An examination of the differing representations of ghostly women in the Tokugawa period presents an interesting insight into the Tokugawa era popular imagination and the public's relation between women and the supernatural.

A past more moving than reality: Motoori Norinaga's literary redefinition of nostalgia

Ekaterina Komova (Columbia University)

The presentation in question deals with the novel reconception of nostalgia subsumed by mono no aware, a literary aesthetic pioneered by the 18th century nativist scholar Motoori Norinaga (1730-1801). Nostalgia, which in and of itself tends to be associated with the longing for a fictionalized version of one's experienced past, appears to be further complicated by the framework of mono no aware that posits its target in the fictitious realm of Genji monogatari (c. 1008). As such, I will explore the rhetoric techniques employed by Norinaga to resolve the issues of fictitiousness and to redefine nostalgia as a concept.

From High Economic Growth to "Down with GNP"

John Leisure (University of California, Los Angeles)

How can national vitality and the effectiveness of governments be measured? After World War II, Gross National Product (GNP) served as the primary indicator. High-Growth in Japan was characterized as an annual expansion of GNP that ranged between five to fourteen percent during the 1955-1973 period. The efficacy of a GNP-first policy cannot be underestimated during this time, as it emphasized industrial and consumer activities while disregarding pollution and social welfare. Taking a critical stance to GNP, Asahi Shimbun ran a series of articles from May to August of 1970 that combined reporting with expert commentary. Provocatively titled "Down with GNP", the series examined the thick reality of economic and social activity during the so-called high-growth period, revealing hidden costs and alternative objectives that were masked by GNP. Using the Asahi series as a starting point, this presentation seeks to reexamine the history of the high-growth period.

The effects of international relations of popular culture: the example of the Korean Wave in Japan

Laura Lopez Aira (University of London)

The popularity of the Korean Wave in Japan reached in 2011 heights only rivaled by the initial boom triggered by the broadcast of Winter Sonata in 2004. The unprecedented appearance of three South Korean idol groups in NHK's highly popular Year End music program Kouhaku Uta Gassen that year attests such popularity. However, although the number of fans has not decreased, the visibility and impact of Kpop in the wider Japanese society has certainly done so after 2012. The visit of the then president of the Republic of Korea Lee Myung-bak to the disputed Takeshima/Dokdo islands in the summer of 2012 not only soured Japan-Korea diplomatic relations, but has also impacted negatively on the appeal of the Korean Wave in Japan. In this presentation, through an analysis of these political and cultural events, I will consider the ways in which international relations constrain cultural exchange.

They say He camw From India: the Eighth-Century Brahman Bishop Bodhisena's Use in Medieval Japanese Art, Literature, and Religion

Abigail MacBain (Columbia University)

In the year 737, the Buddhist monk Bodhisena arrived in Japan. Although he conducted the "eye-opening" ceremony on the giant Vairocana buddha (daibutsu) in Tōdaiji temple, it is his identity as a South Indian from a Brahmanic family that persisted in medieval texts and arts. In this talk, I will examine Bodhisena's journey to Japan, significant events during his lifetime, and his legacy in medieval texts. I will also look at Bodhisena's depiction in medieval art, where, despite his many years in Japan, he is typically portrayed in characteristic Indian garb. In relation, I will explore what concept of India (Tenjiku) early and medieval Japanese held and the potential significance attached to Bodhisena's common appellation of "Brahman bishop" (baramon sōjō).

An Aging Population and Declining Birthrate in Japan

Alexandra Melillo (Saint Michaels College)

One of the most pressing problems in Japan is how the social budget will be affected, and in turn the universal healthcare system, when the aging population reaches and overcomes the working population in the next 30-40 years. As a result, the government has focused on the healthcare industry in order to support economic growth and create innovative products that will, hypothetically, help relieve the overburdened budget. In this presentation I will look at reasons as to why the decreasing population is happening, present evidence that shows the outcome of the demographic turn by 2050, and examine some of the steps that the government has taken in order to combat the budgetary issues that will arise.

If I May Tell a Tale of Myself - From Underground to The Place that was promised by Haruki Murakami

Tianlin Meng (Stanford University)

In 1995, news covering the fatal Tokyo subway sarin attack at the hands of Aum Shinrikyo cultists avalanched Japan's mass media. However, the absence of detailed personal accounts propelled the writer, Haruki Murakami, to pose the question, "What actually happened in the Tokyo subway the morning of March 20, 1995?" Unable to brush aside this angst, he endeavored to chronicle the grievous event from a different angle. This presentation, then, seeks to unveil the face of truth in Murakami's eyes. Taking one step further, the presentation also confronts the issue of a writer's social commitment in light of literature on disasters – both natural and man-made.

The World of Video Game Audio and Fan Arrangement

Stephen Meyerink (Washington University in St. Louis)

In recent years, video game music has steadily become a more and more lively medium, and its appreciation as an art form has grown in kind. However, in spite of that, there are still many who remain unaware of its breadth and value as art and entertainment. This presentation will first approach the question of "what exactly IS video game music," and attempt to navigate the complicated notion of genre as it relates to game audio. Following that, a brief history of game audio hardware's development, and closing with an exploration of the active fan culture will all be presented in service to the demonstration of the complexity and passion underpinning this exciting medium.

The Edo Spirit as seen through Kitagawa Utamaro's Ukiyo-e

Jennifer Myers (Colorado College)

The ukiyo-e artist Kitagawa Utamaro is well known for his bijin-ga, or portraits of beautiful women. However, if we examine his artwork from not only an art perspective, but through the lens of economic, sociological, and other interdisciplinary studies, we can begin to understand some of the aesthetic of Edo townspeople. Throughout the string of sumptuary edicts and strict publishing regulations of the Kansei Reforms, Utamaro incorporated playfulness through devices such as mitate (parody, correspondence) and yatsushi (disguise, transformation), along with subversive techniques to avoid governmental censure such as fūshi (satire) and hanji-e (rebus picture). As these cleverly playful techniques were well received by the Edo townspeople, we can get a sense of the Edoite's tongue-in-cheek spirit. Let's look at the popular Utamaro's artwork from the perspective of an Edo townsperson.

Japanese "Couple Culture" and its commodification

Hazel Naylor (Chapman University)

Due to the economic and social pressures caused by the gradually declining population, both the Japanese government and media have begun to turn their focus to the issue of marriage and childbirth. In other words, dating and companionship among young people have come to be seen as a national issue. The discussion revolves around questions like "why are young people dating less?" and "why is it difficult for young people to form relationships?" With that in mind, this presentation will address the current state of Japanese relationships, as well as how they have come to be commodified in the present day.

Nature and the Self inJapanese Literature

Naomi Pallas (New York University)

In this presentation I will discuss the ways in which the self is expressed through descriptions of nature in Japanese literature. I will focus especially on the changes that occurred in the literary world during and just after the Meiji Restoration, but first I will use the poetry of Ki no Tsurayuki as an example of how writers used nature-related words and literary devices to describe their emotions and actions in classic literature. To examine the ways in which Meiji-era writers' views of the natural world changed during late 18- and early 1900s and the ways these were reflected in the expression of the self and interiority, I will refer to Karatani Kojin's Origin's of Modern Japanese Literature.

Comparisons in the use of folktalk in moral education between Germany and Japan

Jacqueline Pittaway (University of Washington)

In anticipation of the coming war both Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan sought to indoctrinate their citizenry with a strong sense of nationalism. As a result, both countries altered their primary school curriculum to inculcate students with values that the government found appropriate. By examining the use of folk tales in moral education, this presentation will interrogate the changes in moral education as well as compare the way Germany and Japan used moral stories in education.

The East Asian financial Crisis: A Catalyst for Japan's Role in East Asian Economic Regionalism

Abigail Root (University of Washington)

The Asian Financial Crisis not only shocked the world but also made startlingly apparent to the countries of the region the costs and realities of being an integral part of a highly interdependent world. As a result of this crisis and East Asia's heightened awareness of the region's interdependence, East Asian nations began to consider more actively the pursuit of regionalism. As the former lead goose in the region, what role has Japan come to assume in the years following the Asian Financial Crisis? Has it remained mired in the economic stagnation indicative of the post-bubble years or has Japan risen to fill the vacuum of economic leadership in a region dissatisfied with Western economic institutions? In this presentation, I will detail several of Japan's attempts at economic regionalism in the post-crisis years and in closing briefly explore Japan's future prospects within the East Asia region.

Embracing China: Life, Writing and Memories of Uchiyama Kanzo

Jiakai Sheng (Yale University)

In 1913, a Japanese man named Uchiyama Kanzo came to Shanghai as the overseas representative of an Osaka-based pharmaceutical company. For the most part of his thirty-five-year career in China, however, Uchiyama was best known as the proprietor of the Uchiyama Bookstore and a prolific essayist on comparative culture. Established in 1917, his bookstore later became an important theater of contemporary Sino-Japanese cultural and intellectual communication, whose frequent visitors included both Chinese and Japanese figures such as Lu Xun, Guo Moruo and Tanizaki Jun'ichiro. This study aims to examine how Uchiyama's story nuances the transnational history of China and Japan in the early twentieth century against the background of a disturbed state-level relationship between the two countries.

The Power of Poetry in the Izumi Shikibu nikki

Lindsey Stirek (Ohio State University)

In this presentation, I would like to discuss the power of poetry as exhibited in The Diary of Izumi Shikibu. In the Heian era, power was related less to military and physical strength and more to aesthetic appeal and political influence. One of the means of expressing one's aesthetic appeal was poetry, which, especially for women, was important to gaining political influence and advancing of their social standings. This power dynamic is apparent in the work, The Diary of Izumi Shikibu. In this work, there are many examples of Shikibu using poems to exert influence on her relationship with her lover, an imperial prince, as well as to elevate her own status. In this presentation, while also taking the overall structure of the diary into account, I will analyze the power of poetry through examples from the original source.

Shunga: Obscenity or art?

Helen Swift (University of London)

From September to December 2015 shunga was displayed for the first time in Japan at the Eisei Bunko Museum of Art、Tokyo. Shunga, primarily defined as woodblock prints and paintings of sexual themes created in the Edo period (1603-1868), has been exhibited to high acclaim overseas and is widely regarded as a genre of great artistic value. However, because of it's sexually explicit content in Japan, the country of it's birth, the exhibition and publication of shunga is problematic and as such shunga has recently become the focus of heated debate. At the heart of this debate lies the question; is Shunga obscenity or art? As defined in Japanese criminal law established in the Meiji period, ‘obscenity' is material which needlessly stimulates sexual lust or upsets the average person's sense of sexual shame. In this presentation, after first considering how shunga has come to be entangled with the concept of obscenity, I will then outline the ways in which shunga has come to be seen and interpreted in the modern age.

The Tea Industry in Colonial Taiwan

James Utley (University of Hawaii at Manoa)

Taiwan was a colony of Japan from 1895-1945, a period spanning fifty years. During this period, several industries developed in Taiwan, including not only camphor and sugar but also tea. Tea, especially oolong tea, became a lucrative commodity which was traded on the international market. This presentation will show the basic outlines of colonial Taiwan's tea industry as well as Taiwan's domestic and international tea trade. It will also show the various problems within the tea industry at the time, including international competition and the inefficient system of trade within Taiwan. Finally, the presentation will consider several directions I plan to take in future research on this topic.

An Anthropological Approach towards Resarch on Virtual Worlds

Mattias Van Ommen (University of Hawaii at Manoa)

Advancements in internet technology have not only contributed towards the current proliferation of online video games and social networking services, they have also fostered the formation of online communities within these virtual worlds. Despite this, there still exists a tendency towards a one-sided critique of these new media. However, since virtual worlds are experienced through the active participation and creativity of its participants, they constitute a fundamentally different medium from the preceding broadcast media. Therefore, I employ the anthropological method of "participant observation" in order to assess these worlds. I have joined an actual virtual community as an active member, through which I will assess the strength of this method in understanding virtual worlds. Doing so, I will connect my findings with youth culture in Japan, and provide insights towards a sociality which may present itself prominently in the near future of industrialized societies.

Ukihfune and Yosano Akiko: Liberation through the Senses

Chelsea Ward (University of California, Berkeley)

Genji monogatari, the central pillar of the Japanese classical canon, ends not with a bang but rather a whimper, forgoing the splendor of Genji for the seclusion and silence of the tragic figure of Ukifune. Yet upon closer examination of Ukifune's waka in the final Uji chapters, one finds a vivid depiction of feminine struggle for autonomy and agency in a society that forecloses both, all expressed in a language that intertwines subjectivity with physical sensation. Almost a millenium later, Yosano Akiko, poet and feminist famed for her modern translation of the Genji, takes up this very theme in her initial tanka collection Midaregami, which explores the possibilities of overcoming social restrictions on a modern feminine identity through linguistic innovations grounded in overflowing sensory experience.

Restoring Honor: The Role of "State Shintō" in Japanese right-wing Ethnic Nationalism

Andrew Weiss (Yale University)

In pre-war and wartime Japan, patriotism and Emperor worship were enshrined in the educational and political system. To serve these nationalistic aims the government co-opted the animist folkways of Shinto. Shrines previously dedicated to the worship of ancient legendary gods were re-purposed to instill a fanatic political ideology of absolute loyalty to state and Emperor. This use of traditional Japanese religious practices to promote nationalistic aims, so called "State Shinto," was ostensibly banned by the American Occupation in the 1945 Shinto Directive and made impossible by the constitutional separation of church and state. But did this ideology ever really disappear? A look at modern Japanese politics reveals this to be false. The separation of church and state provides only a clumsy hold on an ideology that was never really "religious." Ethnic nationalism, the heart of "State Shinto," still holds a tight grip on Japanese right-wing politics.

Organ donation

Jay Wong (Yale University)

Due to the revolutionary progress and development of medical technology, in these past 30 years the extension of peoples' life span and organ transplants have become quite popular. However, at the same time, the paucity of organ donors has become a serious issue. Thus, we shall consider the following 3 points. (1) How to persuasively convince individuals to become organ donors thereby increasing organ donation numbers, (2) The individual systems of organ donation that currently exist around the world, (3) The comparative analysis of some problems that may arise from laws/policies that seek to increase organ donation as a means to discover scrupulous methods to increase participation in organ donation.

The Story of Safe Childbirth" and Trends in Early Edo Visual Culture

Valerie Zinner (Columbia University)

Illustrated scrolls have long been recognized as a medium that can function as a window into the societies and times that produced them. This talk will focus on a set of illustrated 17th century Japanese hand scrolls in the Harvard Collection that portrays "The Story of Safe Childbirth" and use that set as a means to discuss two trends in early Edo period visual culture, specifically the rising interest in the historical past among the merchant class and the waning of religious fervor in favor of material culture and popular superstition.
